Try the Award-Winning BJ's A&M Honey Bock While It's Available at BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse
Creating award-winning craft beer is what we do at BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse, and our BJ's A&M Honey Bock is among the many examples of this excellence. This seasonal beer earned the gold medal in the Honey Beer category at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival in Denver! Created from a blend of two beer styles at our R&D brewery in Boulder, BJ's A&M Honey Bock pours a deep amber with a creamy head. The aroma is like freshly toasted bread that's been drizzled with fine honey. You'll get those same toast and honey flavors when you take a sip of this full-bodied beer, alongside orange citrus and floral notes. After the sweet flavors of toasted malt and honey, the finish is crisp and dry. One of the things people tend to notice most about this beer is that it's incredibly smooth.
What Beer Styles Inspired BJ's A&M Honey Bock?
BJ's A&M Honey Bock is a blend of two distinctive beer styles: Honey Beer and traditional German Bock.
While they have their own distinctive style, Honey Beers are versatile, since honey can be added to a variety of different beer styles to create something unique. The brewers at BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse thought that a traditional Bock was the perfect candidate for the honey treatment.
Bock has been brewed since the 14th century, and it was historically brewed in order to be ready for winter or spring. These lagers are traditionally sweet, malty and full-bodied, lacking in hop bitterness. You may have noticed that BJ's A&M Honey Bock has a goat on the label; this is a nod to the traditional Bock style, as well. The beer was originally called Einbeck, after the town in which it was brewed. Later, brewers from elsewhere in Germany mispronounced this name as "ein bock," which is the German term for a he-goat. Because of this, most Bock beers are now adorned with the image of a billy goat. And of course, to represent the marriage of Bock and Honey Beer, the goat on the label has an upturned honey pot on its horn.
How Did This Beer Get Its Name?
You know about Bock and Honey Beer, but what about the A&M? Those letters are the initials of the two people who made this G.O.A.T. of all Honey Beers into a reality. Aaron Stueck (the "A") is the Head Brewer in our R&D Brewery in Boulder. His friend Marc (the "M") is a mead-maker. Marc supplied the orange blossom honey that Aaron used to create BJ's A&M Honey Bock. It's a true collaboration between two friends, and the name is a perfect reflection of that.
What Food Pairs Well with BJ's A&M Honey Bock?
The sweetness of this lager means that it pairs exceptionally well with sweeter meals like our Root Beer Glazed Ribs or Sweet Pig® Deep Dish Pizza. It's also a great counterpoint to dishes that blend sweet and spicy, like Honey Sriracha Brussels Sprouts or EnLIGHTened Cherry Chipotle Glazed Salmon. And of course, it's a phenomenal dessert beer. We find it goes particularly well with our Salted Caramel Pizookie®.
